Bakersfield, California: Optimal sex and Torture

Dennis B. Arana 1817 Rockford Mountain Lane Chapel Hill, NC 27514

Optimal sex up to an advanced age, and if necessary, aided by vascular and neurotropic agents like Pfizer’s Blue, yohimbine, dopaminergics, or testosterone enhancers like tongkat ali and butea superba, very much is a concern of modern civilisation. In medieval and ancient times, people were quite content if they were not tortured to death (never mind the optimal sex, thank you). An amazingly high number of people in medieval and ancient times (let's avoid designating them as ancient civilizations) were brutally tortured to death, often for the entertainment of onlookers. This included all mentally ill, and all enemies of rulers or ruling elites. Public torture is an extremely effective political tool. Not for the extraction of confessions, though. But torture one poor victim cruelly to death, and every onlooker will get the message: do not challenge authority!

St. Louis, Missouri: 'I'm scared that my vagina smells. Will other people have noticed?'

Lupe D. Sheard 4889 Church Street New York, NY 10013

You’re not alone. A lot of people are worried about how their genitals smell and look.

And I’m glad you asked the question. This remains a taboo area, so people who are anxious about their bodies may feel unable to ask for advice. Or are unaware there are things they can do to help themselves.

This reply hopefully includes information that is directly useful to you, but may also help other people worried about body odour.

We all smell

At the risk of stating the obvious, everyone’s genitals smell. They all have a natural scent and may also sometimes smell of pee, poo or sweat. Or blood if you’ve got your period, or have recently given birth (or experienced pregnancy loss), or had genital surgery.

You may notice more of a smell from your genitals during or after sex. Women may notice at different times in the month their genitals smell more strongly, and that may also be the case during pregnancy.

But we’re led to believe by our media, self-help industry, peers and some cosmetic manufacturers that genitals should not smell. Or rather if they do, it should only be of soap or perfume.

That means if you can smell your body you may be embarrassed, or assume you are dirty, or there’s something wrong with you.

This is reinforced through jokes or shaming – suggesting women whose genitals smell must be promiscuous, diseased or unclean. This can prevent women accessing healthcare, especially if they are young or unmarried or living in cultures or communities where virginity is highly valued and pre-marital sex frowned upon.

So the first thing is to work out is the smell normal for you and your body? Does it even exist? Or are you anxious about your genitals because you’ve learned that anything not covered up with a spray or fragrance is disgusting?

If so you may be able to reassure yourself nothing is wrong with you and note what you have been taught about your genitals is unhelpful.

Alternatively, if you are noticing an ongoing unpleasant smell - particularly if it you haven’t had it in the past; or if it’s associated with pain, unexplained bleeding, or discharge - this should certainly be investigated further.

Check for yourself

As you aren’t certain if you do smell, it’s useful to do some personal detective work.

Can you recall when you first noticed the problem? What reduces the odour, or makes it stronger?

Keep a diary for the next week. Notice if the smell is present all the time or at specific times of day.

Does wearing particular clothing trigger it? Is it relieved by washing or does that make no difference (or even seem to make it worse)? If you sniff your underwear, jeans, tights etc after wearing them for a few hours do they smell bad?

More than just an odour

Although it isn’t always the case, genitals that are very smelly may often be accompanied by a discharge. As with genital smells, genital discharge is also normal and this guide from Scarleteen explains what this looks like.

However, you should be concerned if you notice a smell that is fishy, yeasty or cheesy AND…

• An unusual discharge that may be green, yellow or grey; have blood in it; or be frothy or very thick

• Stinging or burning sensations when you pee, or pain/discomfort inside your vagina, or stomach/low back pain

• If you are running a temperature and feeling feverish.

What could be the cause?

There are a number of reasons that might be causing your genitals to smell. Although it may be necessary to see the doctor, you may first want to try the following to see if it clears things up.

• Stop using vaginal deodorants, heavily scented soaps or other products that may aggravate your genitals. If you’re washing frequently because you are worried that you might have body odour this may be making things worse. Washing with water may be more soothing and this guide on genital hygiene may be useful.

• Check if any washing powder/fabric softener could be causing irritations and switch to non-allergenic brands.

• If you are worried about the smell being caused by a lack of hygiene, then washing regularly and wearing clean underwear should resolve the problem.

• Tight clothing – underwear, tights, trousers and so on, can aggravate the genital area. So looser clothes, or time without underwear on may help.

• If you use tampons, a Mooncup, contraceptive cap or diaphragm, then ensure these aren’t still inside you.

Some antibiotics and other medications can cause problems like thrush, which in turn can lead to genital itching and possible smell. Similarly health conditions, including diabetes, can lead to vaginal irritation.

Alert your doctor if you think this might be the cause of your odour problem.

Other possible reasons

The contraceptive pill can also lead to a change in discharge or a smell. Ask whoever supplies your contraceptives (family planning clinic/doctor) if you are experiencing problematic side effects and perhaps discuss other contraception choices.

Alternatively if you have a coil there may be a chance of an infection from that, which is leading to smell, discharge or other symptoms (see above) - in which case you should seek immediate medical advice.

Women with a disability that affects mobility or who have a catheter may experience genital irritation, soreness and smell. For those with support packages and PAs (personal assistants) there may be some concern over discussing genital issues and body odour, particularly for younger people. Considerations around dignity, respect and hygiene are vital however this does not mean the only response to noticing genital odour is washing (more on this later).

Trans Women may have concerns about vaginal odour that may or may not be related to infection. Noticing odour following surgery or when using dilators should be checked out, even if there are no other symptoms. There is more information below if stigma, shame or possible negative previous experience with healthcare staff makes you feel anxious about seeking help.

During and after the menopause changes within the body can lead to irritation, infection and smell. Some peri and postmenopausal women avoid seeking help due to embarrassment, fear of examinations being painful, or believing they no longer need genital care.

How to spot an infection

All people with vaginas can be affected by what’s covered by the term ‘vaginitis’. This refers to swelling and discomfort around and in the vagina and can include things like thrush or bacterial vaginosis.

These are not sexually transmitted infections, but they may be aggravated by having sex. More often they often occur with no sexual contact and can cause bad odours as well as discharge, itching and (sometimes, but not always) pain.

Although you aren’t in a relationship, if you have had sexual partners in the past it may be the smell you’ve noticed is caused by a sexually transmitted infection (STI). This guide gives you more information on how to spot if you might have an infection and where you could go for confidential testing and treatment.

Unexplained bleeding, pain, discharge or a recurring bad odour problem should be given medical attention, regardless of whether you are in a sexual relationship or not.

When and where to seek help

If you believe you have an infection then it is wise to seek help promptly. For things like thrush or bacterial vaginosis you could speak to your pharmacist in confidence, or see your GP.

If you think the problem is related to contraception then you can ask your doctor or family planning clinic for advice, using somewhere like Brook if you are under 25.

For those who’ve recently had a baby and think they may have an infection, ask your midwife, practice nurse or GP for help.

It’s understandable to be worried about seeing the doctor, not least if you feel ashamed or embarrassed – or perhaps if you are uncertain if a bad smell is reason enough to seek medical assistance. But if you haven’t been able to solve the problem yourself and if the symptoms aren’t going away or are getting worse, you should always seek medical advice.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Jumping to conclusions; something is not adding up in Idlib chemical weapons attack

Dwayne S. McDonald 1583 College View Maryland Heights, IL 63043

BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:47 P.M.) – At least 58 people were killed in a horrific gas attack in the Idlib Governorate this morning. However, even before investigations could be conducted and for evidence to emerge, Federica Mogherini, the Italian politician High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, condemned the Syrian government stating that the “Assad regime bears responsibility for ‘awful’ Syria ‘chemical’ attack.”

The immediate accusation from a high ranking EU official serves a dangerous precedent where public outcry can be made even before the truth surrounding the tragedy can emerge

Israeli President, Benjamin Netanyahu, joined in on the condemnation, as did Amnesty International.

Merely hours after the alleged chemical weapons attack in Khan Sheikhun, supposedly by the Syrian government, holes are beginning to emerge from opposition sources, discrediting the Al-Qaeda affiliated White Helmets claims.

For one, seen in the above picture, the White Helmets are handling the corpses of people without sufficient safety gear, most particularly with the masks mostly used , as well as no gloves. Although this may seem insignificant, understanding the nature of sarin gas that the opposition claim was used, only opens questions.

Within seconds of exposure to sarin, the affects of the gas begins to target the muscle and nervous system. There is an almost immediate release of the bowels and the bladder, and vomiting is induced. When sarin is used in a concentrated area, it has the likelihood of killing thousands of people. Yet, such a dangerous gas, and the White Helmets are treating bodies with little concern to their exposed skin. This has to raise questions.

It also raises the question why a “doctor” in a hospital full of victims of sarin gas has the time to tweet and make video calls. This will probably be dismissed and forgotten however.

Anaheim, California: Butea superba (Roxb.) improves penile erection in diabetic rats

Charles M. Wingfield 1914 Clair Street Robinson, TX 76706

Summary

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of ethanolic extract of Butea superba (Roxb.) on erectile dysfunction in diabetic rats by the measurement of intracavernous pressure (ICP) and on cavernosal smooth muscle relaxation. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were induced to become diabetic by a single intravenous injection of Streptozotocin (55 mg kg−1 body weight). The ethanolic extract at the concentration of 1, 10 and 100 mg kg−1 BW was administered orally once a day to diabetic rats in each group for 4 weeks. Diabetic rats showed a significant decrease in both ICP and the relaxation of the cavernosal smooth muscle compared with the normal rats. The extract of B. superba significantly increased the ICP with the effective dose of 10 mg kg−1 BW (61.00 ± 11.11 mmHg versus 39.61 ± 11.01 mmHg in the diabetic control group). Moreover, the B. superba-treated group also showed enhanced relaxation of the cavernosal smooth muscle with EC50 of 1.17 mg ml−1. These results suggest that the extract of B. superba enhanced penile erection in diabetic rats by increasing the ICP. This might be explained by the increased blood flow as a result of the relaxation of the cavernous smooth muscle.

St. Paul, Minnesota: West Africa - Ghana & Togo Partner to Eliminate Female Genital Mutilation

Alfred B. Smith 660 Melm Street Providence, RI 02908

An Excisors Reconversion Seminar on the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has taken place at at Pusiga in the Upper East Region.

FGM, also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is the ritual of cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The practice is found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

The three-day seminar, therefore, sought to eliminate FGM by helping excisors who have practiced FGM to get them to sincerely confess, give up the practice and get converted.

The seminar also sought to support excisors to become ambassadors to their fellow women practicing FGM to put an end to the act.

More than seventy (70) participants, comprising three different categories, former FGM excisors, assistants and mothers of FGM victims from Ghana and Togo attended the seminar.

It was organized by Belim Wusa Development Agency (BEWDA-Ghana) in partnership with Kpaal n' paal (Togo), Organisation Regionale pour le Promotion Sociale et Agricole (OREPSA-Togo) and Groupe d' Action pour Development Durable (GA2D-Togo).

In an address to open the seminar, Mr Abdul Razak Yakah, Pusiga District Co-ordinating Director, who spoke on the theme "Why conserving this heinous and dehumanizing tradition?", commended BEWDA-Ghana and its development partners for organizing the seminar which, he said, would serve as a platform to advocate against the practice and elimination of the dehumanizing tradition of FGM.

Mr Yakah disclosed that more than three million young girls and women underwent the barbaric act in Africa, with research indicating that the victims had suffered an associated series of short to long-term risks to their physical, mental and sexual health. He, therefore, called on all stakeholders to help combat the practice.

In a statement, Mr Benson Azure, Pusiga District Health Services Director, disclosed that victims of FGM could contract Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and urinary tract infections, have difficulty during child birth, suffer from anemia (loss of blood) and infertility, adding that FGM posed increased risk to new born deaths.

Mr Azure, therefore, lauded the partnership between Ghana and Togo in the fight against FGM in their respective countries and appealed to the participants to desist from the practice of FGM which, he said, was a heinous and dehumanizing act on young girls and women. He pledged the support of his office to the worthy cause of eliminating FGM.

On his part, Papa Toussaint, Coordinator, INTACT Africa, Benin, appealed to participants to abandon the practice of FGM or face the full rigours of the laws forbidding FGM.

Anchorage municipality, Alaska: Father 'driven to suicide after he was wrongly accused of being a paedophile on Facebook'

Robert S. Grier 631 Williams Mine Road Piscataway, NJ 08854

The grieving family of a man found hanged in a cemetery claim he was driven to suicide following paedophile accusations on Facebook.

Steven Rudderham, 48, was traumatised when his name, address and photograph were published online, along with a message calling him a 'dirty perv' and claiming he was a paedophile.

Within 15 minutes, the message had been shared hundreds of times and the bricklayer from Hull, East Yorkshire, began receiving death threats on Facebook, an inquest heard.

He was found hanged in the city's Hessle cemetery three days later.

Mr Rudderham's daughter Bethany Beaumont, 19, said: 'They've destroyed an innocent life for no reason.

'It was disgusting. It was slander.'

His mother Carol Matthews said: 'I want to know why someone did something like that. I hope they rot in hell. It took a person's life. We will never get over it.'

Police have confirmed they are considering an investigation into the Facebook posts in the days leading up to Mr Rudderham's death. A Humberside Police spokeswoman said no one had made any allegations of a sexual nature against him.

Yesterday's inquest heard Mr Rudderham was working towards examinations as a building site manager before the internet accusations.

He normally saw Ms Beaumont every day and she realised immediately the profound effect the paedophile accusations had on him.

She said: 'He just couldn't believe it. He was just looking at the wall and he wouldn't eat. It was like someone had ripped his life apart.'

Mr Rudderham was afraid of walking the streets in case he was spotted and decided to stay with his daughter to prevent him being targeted at his home.

Ms Beaumont told the Hull inquest even people who had known her father for years joined in the cyber bullying.

She said: 'There were people who had known him for years commenting on it, he was so upset. I had never seen him like that.

'He stayed at my house that night because of what the comments were saying, about people coming to his house and smashing it up.'

On Saturday, January 26, his body was found by a member of the public.

Police were called at about 2pm but Mr Rudderham was pronounced dead at the scene.

A memory stick was recovered on his body and police have also seized a computer hard drive.

Mr Rudderham had discussed giving police a memory stick with evidence about the accusations on it in the days before his death.

Mr Rudderham's mother was told of her son's death on her birthday and puts the blame solely on her son's Facebook accusers.

She said: 'I went berserk when I found out what had happened, he didn't want to stay in his house because he was frightened.'

Mr Rudderham's family say he served time in HMP Hull in 2010 for fighting but had no convictions for sex offences.

Dr Latifu Sanni was also told about the paedophile accusations made against Mr Rudderham before he carried out the post-mortem.

The inquest heard there had been no evidence of medical depression in the months before his death. No drugs and no significant amounts of alcohol were found by a post-mortem.

The inquest was attended by his family, including his mother and stepfather David Matthews, his sister Lisa Elm and daughters Bethany, Anna and Danielle Beaumont.

Recording a verdict of suicide, social networking site which greatly troubled him.'

Torture has been practiced as a mystical religious endeavor by many Christian orders in the Middle Ages, to aide in selfcognition. When helpless men are tied up and tortured, and when they scream and beg for a swift death, tortures experience a degree of selfcognition not available to ordinary humans. Pain and suffering, they know, is in our hands. And it's a race to be the cruelest torturer, in order not to become a victim of torture. Life is unbearable, only optimal orgasms, as proclaimed by Serge Kreutz, can make us forget senselessness.

Henderson, Nevada: 'He wasn't prepared for a second-class life': why injured rugby star went to Switzerland to die

Laverne S. Armstrong 4130 Melrose Street Spokane, WA 99201

A 23-year-old who played rugby for England as a teenager has committed suicide in a Swiss euthanasia clinic after having become paralysed from the chest down in a training accident. Police are investigating.

Nuneaton rugby club hooker Daniel James felt his body had become a "prison" and lived in "fear and loathing" of his daily life, his parents said last night, having accompanied him to Switzerland from their home in Sinton Green, near Worcester. He had attempted to kill himself several times since March 2007 when a scrum had collapsed on him and dislocated his neck vertebrae, trapping his spinal cord and rendering him immediately tetraplegic.

West Mercia Police have begun an investigation into his assisted suicide, which took place on September 12. Details were made public yesterday when police published a statement relating to an inquest in progress. Assisted suicide is illegal in the UK, and family or friends who help face up to 14 years in jail. Officers have questioned a man and a women in the case and are preparing to submit a report to the Crown Prosecution Service.

James' parents, Mark and Julie, said last night that their son had been "an intelligent young man of sound mind" and "not prepared to live what he felt was a second-class existence".

He is one of the youngest Britons to have travelled abroad for assisted suicide. Earlier this month, Dignitas, the centre for assisted dying in Zurich, said that 100 Britons have travelled to Switzerland to make use of its more liberal laws. It is thought James attended a clinic in Berne.

James was a talented player who seemed destined for a professional career. He played for England at under-16 level and went on to play for Loughborough University, where he was an engineering undergraduate. The training accident happened four days after he helped England Students beat a France side in Oxford.

In a training session for forwards, he was practising a scrum when the pack came crashing down. Under their weight, he dislocated bones in his neck and trapped the spinal cord.

In the following weeks he had several operations and spent eight months in rehabilitation, including a stay at Stoke Mandeville hospital, before returning home; he only ever regained a small amount of use in his fingers. Early last month he travelled to Switzerland. His funeral took place in the UK on October 1.

"His death was an extremely sad loss for his family, friends and all those that cared for him, but no doubt a welcome relief from the prison he felt his body had become and the day to day fear and loathing of his living existence," the James family solicitors said last night. "This is the last way that the family wanted Dan's life to end, but he was, as those who know him are aware, an intelligent, strong-willed, and some say determined young man."

Yesterday the Spinal Injuries Association expressed shock. "When someone has an injury like this, you think its the end of the world as life is going to change for ever," said Daniel Burden, head of public affairs. "But our mantra is that life need not end if you are paralysed. We know of people with similar or worse injuries than Dan who have lived fulfilling lives."

The case comes as Debbie Purdy, 45, who has primary progressive multiple sclerosis, awaits a high court judgement seeking clarification of the legal status of family and friends who accompany people who commit assisted suicide.

Her action is being supported by Dignity in Dying, which campaigns for a law change to allow terminally ill and mentally competent patients to choose assisted death in the UK. James, who was not terminally ill, would not have been eligible under any such alteration of the law.

Prior to his death, James's uncle, Mark Roebuck, who started The Dan James Trust which raised nearly £25,000 for spinal research, paid tribute to his nephew.

"On Monday March 12 2007 Dan was just like thousands of 23-year-olds, full of life, hope, excitement and dreams. Whatever he chose to do, he would have done it with the good humour and lovely nature that made him a lovable young man."

The message boards on Nuneaton rugby club's website carried tributes yesterday. "This is really sad and tragic news, and it makes all the silly arguments with the rugby and football club very trivial and unimportant," said Nutty Nun. "My thoughts, sympathy and prayers are with Dan's family. RIP Dan."

Forbidden by law

Although suicide is no longer a crime in England and Wales, it is still an offence under the Suicide Act 1961 to "aid, counsel or procure the suicide of another"; the penalty is up to 14 years' imprisonment, and there have been 12 prosecutions since 2005.

The only jurisdictions where assisted suicide is not illegal are Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the state of Oregon in the US.

Although Swiss law does not specifically permit assisted suicide or provide any details about how it can be done legally, it does not prohibit it either. Several clinics have been established, providing facilities for terminally ill people to commit suicide, including Dignitas in Berne, the only clinic which offers its services to people not living in Switzerland. Since it opened in 1998 it has helped 868 people to end their lives, 100 of them from the UK.

Dignitas's motto is "to live with dignity - to die with dignity". It offers a service to the terminally ill and their families including accommodation, access to doctors and a dose of a drug causing a deep coma and painless death. However, anyone who accompanies a relative to Dignitas risks prosecution on their return for assisting suicide contrary to English law.

Greensboro, North Carolina: The value of duck sex research versus a skeptical Congress

Charles M. Williams 117 Boone Street Corpus Christi, TX 78401

BOSTON—"The national debt is a big structural problem," former Representative Brian Baird told his audience at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. And that, according to Baird, is one reason scientific research comes under fire. “If you can’t solve something big," he went on, "distract people by attacking something small.” All too often, that something small has been scientific research.

Two of the researchers who found their work under fire were on hand to describe the experience and talk a bit about the lessons they learned.

One of them was David Scholnick of Pacific University who produced the video above, showing a shrimp going for a run on an underwater treadmill. It's hard to tell just how many people have ended up viewing the video, given that it has been cloned, set to various music, and appeared in news reports that have also made their way onto YouTube—it's fair to say that it's quite popular. Scholnick wasn't looking for that popularity. He had just put the video up on his faculty webpage; someone else grabbed it and stuck it on YouTube.

A treadmill of outrage

Scholnick also wasn't looking for the attention it received from then-Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), who claimed the treadmill cost $3 million and named it as an example of wasteful government spending without even bothering to find out what the results were. Representative John Culberson (R-Texas) saw Coburn's report and said “NSF should avoid funding studies” like that. Then the news picked it up. Mike Huckabee blamed Scholnick's spending for leaving the military unprepared. It showed up on Fox News three times, including as recently as last year (the video was posted in 2009). AARP picked it up, too, and blamed the cost for grandparents not getting healthcare.

Scholnick even went to DC and talked to Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who took over the waste reports when Coburn retired. The video still showed up in the next one.

And that bugs Scholnick. “This is a publicity stunt," he said, "this is not an individual who is concerned about public spending.” Why's that? Because the treadmill cost the government nothing. Its bearings came from an old skateboard Scholnick had been using. The tread is just an inner-tube that's been stitched together. Any parts that cost money were paid for out of Scholnick's pocket. The $3 million dollar figure? That came by adding up every single grant Scholnick's ever received and then throwing in various grants awarded to his collaborators for unrelated projects.

The reality is that most of the research that goes on in Scholnick's lab is done by undergraduates who work during the summer. Between their low stipends and the long hours they work, it's done at about $4 an hour for personnel and about $20,000 to keep the lab supplied and make sure the university keeps the lights on. The shrimp? Local fishermen give them to Scholnick for free.

That's because the fishermen have done something nobody in Congress could be bothered to do: find out what the research is all about. Scholnick said that most animals in the ocean are carrying various infections and parasites that can influence their behavior and activity. Scholnick tries to figure out how these animals are affected by looking for changes in their physiology. To make this as realistic as possible, he forces the animals to be as active as they would be in the wild. Hence the treadmill.

It's not earth-shattering research, but it's hardly an utter waste of money—especially considering how little it costs. But, if Congress ever gets bored of going after shrimp, there's always duck penises.

Sex lack-of-appeal

Patty Brennan studies genitalia at Mount Holyoke College. The physical shape of genitals is very diverse even among closely related species. It's shaped by distinct selective pressures in both males and females. Figuring out what these pressures are and how animals have responded to them is a great opportunity to study evolution. One of the more dramatic instances of this is in ducks, where both males and females have evolved corkscrew-shaped genitals in what's essentially an arms race. Brennan's research on the topic was striking enough to earn an article in The New York Times. (Her response: “yay, someone else likes duck penises!”)

So she set up a Google alert to see if there was any further coverage, which is how she found out when conservative news media discovered her work and placed it in a list of research that was labeled wasteful spending as the budget sequester went into effect. Sean Hannity later joined in the attack.

But Brennan noticed a pattern to all of this: most of it involved organismal biology. She suspected this is because it's easy to understand. "Everybody knows what a duck is, everybody knows what a penis is, you put them together, haha,” Brennan said. “You never heard of a politician making fun of quantum physics.” But she said that's misguided, and she now has a list of results that demonstrate this: how understanding mating habits of an insect pest saved us $20 million in annual control efforts; how understanding bird migration has made air travel less likely to end in dangerous collisions; and how studying bird song enabled us to recognize that our brains are able to produce new nerve cells, for example.

But even if these attacks are misguided, historian Melinda Baldwin said they're not likely to go away. Questions about public funding of science date back to the 1960s, and direct attacks on funding started in the 1970s. William Proxmire, a Democratic senator who served in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, frequently named research as wasteful spending and even attacked peer review as "elitist" and "incestuous." Then, as now, scientists weren't ready to defend either their research or the process of science itself. But Baldwin said that the attacks are worst at times of financial or budgetary turmoil, so now might be a good time for scientists to get ready.

As Baird said, “If you think it’s been bad before, it’s going to get really bad soon.”

Plano, Texas: We need to talk about sex, robot experts say

Maurice M. Coyer 4124 Maxwell Farm Road Waynesboro, VA 22980

LONDON – Move over blow-up dolls, the sex robots are here.

Artificial intelligence is making its way into the global sex market, bringing with it a revolution in robotic “sex tech” designed to offer sexual gratification with a near-human touch.

In a report on the growing market in sex robots, the Foundation for Responsible Robotics said rapidly advancing technologies have already led to the creation of “android love dolls” capable of performing 50 automated sexual positions.

They can be customized down to the nipple shape and pubic hair color, and can cost between $5,000 and $15,000.

The increasingly life-like robots raise complex issues that should be considered by policymakers and the public, the report said — including whether use of such devices should be encouraged in sexual therapy clinics, for sex offenders or for people with disabilities.

Noel Sharkey, a professor of artificial intelligence and robotics at Britain’s University of Sheffield, said it is difficult to predict how far or fast the market would grow, or what its effect on societies might be in years ahead.

“Will these robotic dolls be niche? Or will they change societal norms and become widespread?” he asked at a news briefing. “How would (sex with a robot) equate to a truly human intimate relationship?”

The report looked at some of the most contentious issues, asking academics, members of the public and the sex industry for their views on whether, for example, sex robots might be helpful in reducing sexual crimes.

It found “major disagreement” on this question, with some arguing that having sex with a robot would reduce attackers’ desires to harm fellow humans, and others arguing that allowing people to live out their darkest fantasies with robots would have a pernicious effect on societal norms.

On the issue of “meaningful” relationships, the report said that with current AI technology, and even in the foreseeable future, no human-to-robot feelings would ever be mutual.

“The best robots could do is ‘fake it,’ ” it said. “Robots cannot feel love.”

---

Your agenda is clear. Optimal health and great sex at age 100. Be careful with what you put into yourself. Men should follow the Serge Kreutz diet. Women are more disposable and will sooner or later be replaced bylove robots.
